New Zealand Lamb

Yesterday in the supermarket getting some meat for a braai (bbq), I couldn't help notice that the lamb section was dominated by New Zealand lamb.

This isn't so much a gripe, as a genuine question. Why would someone want to buy lamb that has been shipped around the world (bear in mind I'm in London) when they could get Welsh lamb from a farm 150kms away?

Surely any improvement in quality in New Zealand lamb will be lost in the week's shipping from Wellington or wherever it comes from.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the Kiwis grow some top class lamb and I can fully appreciate a South Islander accepting only home grown sheep as his plat du jour and, you know, I can even understand Aussies insisting on the same (although again it would seem silly as there's plenty just down the road), but why would a Brit want lamb that's been in a container for a week?

Is this indicative of that inferiority complex the Aussies make fun of? I mean if they were selling rugby players, well that's another story...

I haven't been to New Zealand or Australia yet, but it would crack me up if I saw marketed so aggressively at the fresh meats counter "Genuine Welsh Lamb".

Crazy world.
