EU Audit

Leesie I was prompted to write this Gripe after reading the Gripe about Plumbers and Exams. Your answer referred to Accountancy Exams. Well this Gripe is loosely based on Accounts and Auditors but is praising their resolve, which is very difficult for me to do so I ma typing this with my eyes closed!

Your readers may have read in the press recently an article which in most papers was relegated to page 7 or 8 in the corner beneath the advert for double glazing. In fact the article should have been banner headlines on every newspaper even dislodging the hot news on the X Factor in the Sun.

For the 11th (yes eleventh) year running Auditors have refused to sign-off the EU accounts. They give their reasons as being that they cannot account for BILLIONS of Euros. They go on to state this may be due to fraud!

Those of us that are self-employed or run small companies know that if your accounts are not agreed and submitted within 9 months the fines start racking up and eventually you will be closed down. Not so our masters and betters on the European Gravy Train, it appears they can carry on indefinitely using our tax money for whatever project they fancy without ever having to account for it. UK law is based on precedent so I intend to use this scandalous state of affairs as a reason not to submit any company accounts or my Tax Return this year. I'm sure that initially the Revenue and later the Judge will of course be very sympathetic.

Please will you visit me in prison?

BA, This is a good point. Two things spring to my mind here. 1. Who elects these big spenders in the European parliament, and 2. are they not the same people making a fuss about fraud in Africa? One could argue that when Africa starts giving to Europe, they'll be in a place to point out the hypocrisy, but in the mean time, I'll just let the gripe sit here...
