Flynn's article is full of half-truths and ignorance. He might do well to read "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" The U.S. creates empires in third world countries by creating huge debts those countries are to repay while the U.S. maintains significant political control. Pretty much what England was good at a few decades past (Iraq, for instance).
Some points are well-taken - but the fact that the U.S. is a genetic melting pot, simply means that the world gene pool got together here and created some creative minds - it really doesn't speak to the politics of the country. Especially today. It means we have a wide gene pool - and have the potential of being the best of what the world has to offer - only because we are in this sense, the watering hole for almost every corner of the globe.
There is no mention of a corporate/government control of the media today. No mention of the massive debt due to war, no mention of the level of per capita poverty for the elderly and children in this country - compared, say, to the EU.
On and on it goes. It's easy to bad mouth the "left" or the intelligencia while espousing White House sentiments. The only difference between the mainstream Americans and the naysayers is the information they access. Most Americans take propaganda for news, and truth.
As for entertainment - although it is true that I see U.S. influence in movie and television throughout the world - I don't necessarily think it shapes world politics. I've seen some incredible movies from other countries - full of intelligence, sensitivity and creative genius. When a country produces a lot of entertainment - it means just that - there is a lot of entertainment to spread around the world - like a truck full of manure. It doesn't mean there is substance, or value to it.
On and on I could go (but, shall spare you). Ultimately, the U.S. is just too big for its britches (geographically). You really can't have a democracy when the national voice is so small - and obscured by corporate interests.
My only suggestion would be for Flynn to pull his head out of his ass and read some comparisons on education, health care, political participation etc. between the U.S. and almost any other developed country.
That's the end of my tirade. Gotta run. Have a good one. Hope all is well. Try not to read too much of this genre of merde.
